Our Foundation

The Emergency Medical Institute began as the Center for Emergency Training and Development back in 1990. Originally based out of North Shore University Hospital, the organization was developed by a group of passionate and concerned emergency medical professionals seeking to educate students who were without EMS agency affiliation.

In its early existence, the Center operated out of a van that would deliver equipment and supplies to class locations throughout the County of Nassau.  Having no dedicated facilities, classes were often conducted at local fire stations, ambulance corps, and community centers.

In 1992, the Center for Emergency Training and Development created the region's first Paramedic Education Program, and only the second such program on Long Island.  After more than twenty-five years of delivering the most comprehensive and in-depth paramedic education, Northwell Health has graduated well over 400 new Paramedics.

Today, the Northwell Health Emergency Medical Institute educates over 1,000 emergency medical professionals per year, and is an authorized New York State Department of Health, Bureau of EMS Course Sponsor in the counties of; Nassau, Manhattan, and Queens.  Our students come from all facets of the industry, and neighboring communities.  Amidst our many partnerships, the Emergency Medical Institute is the proud medical education provider to; Nassau BOCES, York College, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the Port Authority Police of NY & NJ, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police Department, the New York City Department of Investigation, Hofstra University Public Safety and the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

The Emergency Medical Institute has emerged as the area’s premier destination for emergency medical education.  Northwell Health, the Center for Learning & Innovation, the Center for Emergency Medical Services, the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing & Physician Assistant Studies and the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell have compiled their resources to create the area’s largest and most technically-advanced educational facilities in the region.
