Advanced Standing Policy

It is the policy of the Northwell Health Emergency Medical Institute (EMI) to recognize prior knowledge and learning, and waive requirements of courses where applicable, to improve the student learning experience.

Purpose:

Provide a process by which candidates may efficiently apply and be granted “advanced standing” for all original EMS courses, including Certified First Responder (CFR)/Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and Paramedic level courses. Candidates seeking advanced EMS certification (AEMT, EMT-CC, and Paramedic), MUST maintain NYS EMT Certification throughout the entire course of training.

Procedure:

1. The candidate must be enrolled in an original EMS certification course and request, in writing, to the Course Instructor Coordinator (CIC), “advanced standing” in the course. This request may be submitted prior to the start of the course and no later than ten (10) business days after the start of the course. Failure to submit appropriate documentation within required timeframe may delay, or disqualify, the candidate from consideration.

2. Accompanying the written request for “advanced standing” the candidate MUST provide copies of the following:

  • Professional license(s)
  • Certification(s)
  • College transcripts, if applicable
  • Course completion records from relevant continuing education programs (e.g. CPR, ACLS, PALS or equivalent, clinical training, and experience)
  • Professional resume or curriculum vitae
  • A non-refundable check, money order, or credit/debit payment for the appropriate online cognitive assessment fee for the level of testing (i.e. $65 for EMT course, $80 for Paramedic course.)

3. The candidate’s cognitive knowledge, psychomotor skills, and clinical proficiency will be assessed and evaluated at a level equal to or greater than the entry-level proficiency of a graduate from the course.

4. Cognitive knowledge objectives shall be assessed by proctored written examination. The candidate must take topic-level module examinations that correlate with the scheduled course material. If the candidate successfully passes a specific module examination, attendance at the scheduled sessions for those topics and module examination shall be waived. If the candidate fails to pass the topic-level module examination, the candidate is required to attend all scheduled sessions for those topics as well as passing that module examination. Candidates are permitted only one (1) attempt at each topic-level module examination for “advanced standing”.

5. Psychomotor objectives shall be evaluated through a formal practical skills examination (PSE) that will be given at a date and time designated by the course sponsor. The PSE may be given in conjunction with other courses that are being conducted at the Emergency Medical Institute (EMI), or at the discretion of the course sponsor. Any candidate successfully passing a specific skill during the PSE shall be waived from attending the sessions associated with that skill. However, regardless of receiving “advanced standing” for psychomotor objectives during the course, the candidate MUST attend and successfully pass the NYS PSE at the end of the course.

6. Clinical and field internship objectives shall be evaluated based upon supporting documentation provided by the candidate and upon review by the course medical director. The course medical director may choose to waive all or some of the clinical objectives for the candidate.

7. Once a decision is made by the course Medical Director to grant approval for advanced standing, the candidate and course instructor coordinator (CIC) will sign a written agreement outlining the candidate’s course requirements.

8. Once a candidate has successfully completed ALL course requirements to the satisfaction of the course Medical Director, he/she is eligible to take the state certifying PSE and written examination, whenever during the course that may occur. In accordance with New York State Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services Policy, the Northwell Health Emergency Medical Institute (EMI) shall permit “advanced standing” in any of its original EMS Course offerings, if the candidate possesses current certification or licensure in the following professions:

  • Emergency Medical Technician
  • Advanced EMT
  • EMT-Critical Care
  • Registered Nurse
  • Nurse Midwife
