Paramedic Program

The Northwell Difference
This program leaves the traditional teaching methods behind, and adopts new and innovative methodologies for learning that have been shown to promote student interest and growth. The program minimizes the standard lecture format, and integrates state-of-the-art educational methods in order to advance student learning.

The experiential adult learning process has been designed to engage students and allow them to think openly and creatively. Program participants work both in teams and individually to achieve learning objectives. Teamwork is an important core value in healthcare and this program. Our curriculum promotes communication and interpersonal skills that are vital in today's healthcare environment.

Traditional paramedic programs present material in bulleted, outlined presentations with clinically inexperienced faculty. Our innovative program utilizes a problem and case-based curriculum to present students with assessment and treatment scenarios within the context of patient care. Course faculty are experienced ALS field and physician providers with years of multidisciplinary experience. Our faculty is able to draw upon their extensive real-world knowledge to guide, facilitate, and foster the student’s learning process.

Patient Simulation Settings
Our 45,000 square foot, state-of-the-art educational facility in Lake Success contains some of the most innovative and cutting edge educational environments in the country. Students are afforded unparalleled learning experiences with over twenty-five high-fidelity simulation settings including adult, child, infant, and obstetrical simulators. Case-based scenarios allow program participants to learn and practice clinical decisions, integrate psychomotor skills, and receive immediate patient feedback on chosen treatment options. Additionally, students are able to interact with standardized patients (human actors) that are specifically trained to present real life patient scenarios and provide immediate feedback as to student performance.

Clinical Experiences
With a healthcare network that includes: twenty-three hospitals, five trauma centers, a school of medicine, a school of graduate nursing, an advanced air medical program, and our own 9-1-1 and inter-facility ambulance agency, our students are provided unprecedented access to clinical and educational experiences unique only to Northwell Health.
Currently, the following hospitals/clinical sites are primarily utilized by our paramedic program:

  • North Shore University Hospital at Manhasset: Emergency Department, Medical and Labor & Delivery

  • Northwell Long Island Jewish Medical Center: Emergency Department, ICU, Psychiatric/Behavioral Emergency Department

  • Northwell Cohen’s Children Hospital: Pediatric Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit

  • Northwell Staten Island University Hospital: Emergency Department

  • Northwell Plainview Hospital: Operating Suites

  • Northwell Syosset Hospital: Emergency Department

  • Northwell Southside Hospital: Emergency Department, ICU, Labor & Delivery

  • Northwell Lenox Health Greenwich Village: Emergency Department

Inter-Professional Education
Healthcare in the 21st-century requires, if not demands, that paramedics work as part of a healthcare team. Individuals from across Northwell Health, as well as from across the country, come to the Center for Learning Innovation for a variety of educational experiences. As a result, students will encounter and interact with professionals from disciplines that span the entire health care continuum. How better for students to learn and understand their integral roles within a healthcare team?
